Mar 17th:

It was back in 1994 that Graham Turner lost his job as manager of Wolves. This article appeared in the Independent on March 17th 1994:

GRAHAM Taylor and the man he ditched as England captain, Bryan Robson, emerged as rivals for the job as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday following the end of Graham Turner's seven and a half year reign.

Turner and his assistant, Garry Pendrey, offered their resignations in the wake of Wolves' 3-0 defeat at Portsmouth on Tuesday, which came 48 hours after their FA Cup exit at Chelsea. The Molineux board accepted both, entrusting temporary control to the captain, Peter Shirtliff.

Wolves' chief executive, Keith Pearson, said the club hoped to appoint a successor 'sooner rather than later' and claimed that while they had no one particular in mind, the new man would be 'someone with experience'.

That might appear to rule out Robson, who is thought to have boardroom support, while enhancing the prospects of Steve Coppell, Arthur Cox and Taylor. Wolves' owner, Sir Jack Hayward, is an admirer of the former England manager, who still lives in the West Midlands following a successful spell at Aston Villa, though sources close to Molineux consider that the 'Turnip Factor' might make him unacceptable to supporters.

'It's a very sad day - the board feel terrible about it just as Graham Turner does,' Pearson said. 'He made a great contribution to this club, but at the end of the day he realised that he had done as much as he could.'

Wolves, 13th in the First Division but only six points adrift of the play-off places, were Turner's childhood heroes, despite a Merseyside upbringing. He enjoyed success as player-manager of Shrewsbury, taking them up twice on a shoestring budget, but fared less well with Villa, being dismissed after two years.

In October 1986, he replaced Brian Little as Wolves' manager when the former European pioneers were struggling in the lower Fourth. Wolves were promptly knocked out of the FA Cup by Chorley, but Turner's £35,000 signing of Steve Bull, a raw reserve striker with nearby West Bromwich, proved the catalyst for their revival.

'Bully' became a Black Country cult figure as Wolves won successive promotions. In recent seasons, however, the fans' expectations outstripped the team's achievements, and a substantial section of the crowd demanded Turner's sacking.

Sir Jack remained loyal to Turner, arguing that he had served Wolves well during their brushes with bankruptcy and deserved the chance to build a team worthy of the rebuilt Molineux. Since last season, Turner had lavished more than £3.5m on the side, but their patchy performances were not helped by long-term injuries to Bull and Geoff Thomas.

Former Hereford United player Darren Peacock has been sold by QPR to Newcastle United.

After having made over 100 league appearances for QPR, Peacock was purchased by Kevin Keegan of Newcastle United on 24 March 1994, for £2.7 million, to strengthen their defence in their first season in the Premier League. A sell-on clause meant that Hereford received a total fee of £440,000 for the player.

Hereford United manager Ian Bowyer brought Peacock from Newport County to Edgar Street and in April 1989 he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Colchester United.

Oct 4th:

Hereford United 0 Nottingham Forest 0 (report compiled from the Independent and other sources)

An attendance of 8953 for this sescond leg Coca-Cola Cup tie was the highest since the Taylor report put restrictions on the capacity at Edgar Street.

Frank Clark was forced to relive bitter memories at Edgar Street before seeing Nottingham Forest safely overcome Hereford with a goalless draw.

The Forest manager was a member of the Newcastle side that was on the receiving end of one of the biggest FA Cup shocks in history when they were beaten by Ronnie Radford's remarkable long shot. Twenty-two years on from that painful day, the memories came flooding back as Hereford's Andy Reece was given the glimmer of a chance to send the second-round tie into extra time.

But the opportunity was missed, and although the Third Division team became the first side to stop Clark's men scoring this season, Forest's 2-1 victory from the first leg proved enough.

"When I saw one of their player's get the ball with five minutes to go Ronnie Radford's goal flashed up in front of me," a relieved Clark said. "I am just glad we got through to the next round."

Stan Collymore missed a host of chances for Forest.

Hitchin 4 Hereford United 2 (report from the Independent)

Micky Wilson, a tar-layer by day, blocked Third Division Hereford United's road to Wembley with the decisive third goal in Hitchin's 4-2 FA Cup replay victory at Top Field.

The the former League of Ireland player, who was with Dundalk and Monaghan United before moving to Hertfordshire in the summer, then drove off in his van from the Diadora League club's car park, ready for another day's resurfacing work. "I'll be singing a happy song at my work, all right," he said.

From Tarmacadam to Adams Park: the home of Wycombe Wanderers, is probably the next FA Cup venue for Wilson and Hitchin even though they have been drawn at home to Martin O'Neill's Second Division side in the second round. Local police are unlikely to allow Top Field to stage the game after last night's replay ended in chaos.

The result was virtually settled when Wilson fired Tony Pennock's punched clearance back past the Hereford goalkeeper from 20 yards after insurance salesman Jon Bone and clerk Gary Williams replied to Hereford strikes by Steve White and Gary Pick.

When Shaun Marshall, a carpenter, scored Hitchin's fourth goal in injury time the pitch was enveloped in smoke from a red flare lit by fans behind the goal.

Referee Graham Poll immediately blew the final whistle as supporters invaded the pitch. Hitchin could now face a fine from the Football Association, subject to his report.

The Hitchin manager, Andy Melvin, who saw his side reach the second round for the first time in 18 years, said: "We'll worry about that later. At the moment it is just great to celebrate a marvellous win."

Hereford, FA Cup giant-killers in 1972 when they beat Newcastle, suffered their sixth red card of the season when Richard Wilkins was sent off nine minutes before half-time.

John Layton, in only his third game since being appointed manager, said: "It is clear I'll have to get some new players in if we are to climb away from the bottom of the Third Division - that is, if I have a future with the club myself."

Dec 26th:

Mansfield 7 Hereford United 1

Whilst the Bulls were 1-0 down at half-time, there was no thought that by the end of the game they would be on the wrong end of a 7-1 hiding.

Two minutes into the second half Bulls keeper Tony Pennock was left started as Ian Baraclough launched a free-kick, with the wind behind it, from 45 yards. And then in the space of six minutes another four goals went past Pennock.

The Bulls scored a consolation goal on 60 minutes as Richard Wilkins unleased an unstoppable striker from 20 yards. However it was the only shot on target from the Bulls all afternoon.

There was one comical moment late in the game when Mansfield tried to sub Kevin Lampkin. He left the field to applause only to come back on when the referee realised the Stags had already made their two substitutions.

And to cap it all the Stags scored their seventh goal of the afternoon with just one minute of normal time left.
