April 1996

April 6th:

HEREFORD United 1 Fulham 0 (report from the Sunday Mirror)

Tony James kept Hereford United's final push for a Third Division play-off place in their sights with a superb first half winner against Fulham.

James rose high above the Fulham defence to head home a free kick from fullback Kevin Lloyd in the 36th minute.

Michael Mison did get the ball into the Hereford net six minutes into the second half but Mike Conroy was penalised for fouling keeper Chris MacKenzie and United clinched their fourth successive home win.

Graham Turner manager of Hereford who have taken 23 points in a nine-game unbeaten home run, said: "In our push for a play-off place, we are having to grind out results. A win is more important than the performance in our present position."

April 13th:

HEREFORD 3 Orient 2 (report from the Sunday Mirror)

Hot-shot Steve White notched up his 201st Football League goal to earn Hereford a vital win over Orient.

The 37-year-old veteran scored his 200th in the 57th minute. Then, 11 minutes later, he outpaced the Londoners' defence to fire home a second. It was United's fourth consecutive win and White has now netted 26 goals this season.

Midfielder Richard Wilkins headed United in front in the 38th minute.

April 16th:

Hereford United 3 Plymouth 0 (Attd 4739)

A hat-trick for Steve White including a penalty, his first for the Bulls.

April 20th:

MANSFIELD 1 Hereford 2 (report from the Sunday Mirror)

In-form Hereford made it six wins in six games to create a new club record and remain on course for their first promotion in 20 years.

A late goal by Chris Hargreaves, a simple tap-in after keeper Ian Bowling failed to hold Steve White's shot on the turn, clinched victory.

Mansfield, reduced to 10 men a minute before half time, had threatened to halt Hereford's promotion drive when Mark Todd kicked Tony James' header off the line 20 minutes from time.

Hereford had gone close early on through headers from Wilkins, Smith and Brough.

Hargreaves then put Wilkins behind the home defence, but with only the keeper to beat he shot straight at his legs.

In the 31st minute, United were made to pay for the missed chances when Steve Harper hammered a loose ball low into the corner of the net from 20 yards after Hereford failed to clear a rare home attack.

The in-form White twice went close to a Hereford equaliser before he made amends with his eighth goal in four games a minute before half time.

White's shot after a defensive mix-up left the keeper stranded but was handled on the line by full back Hackett, who was sent off, and White clinically tucked away the penalty.

Colin West had equalised for Orient and also grabbed a late consolation.

After the game Bulls manager Graham Turner commented: "I was embarrassed by our performance on such a good surface, but you have to grind out results at this time of the season."

April 22nd:

IT's the race for the title that is now dominating the thoughts of North End, Gillingham and outsiders Bury reports the Daily Mail. These three are favourites to hold on to the automatic promotion berths, though Darlington and Hereford remain in contention.

Darlington have a game in hand on their rivals and face Hereford at Edgar Street tomorrow. Hereford still have four games to play and it is mathmatically possible for one of these two teams to still win the title.

Hereford manager Graham Turner, once at Wolves and Aston Villa, has won three promotions in the past so is well aware of how to keep a team on course in a hectic run-in.

April 23rd:

Hereford United 0 Darlington 1.

The Bulls lost their first game in nine but are now 6th in the League.

April 27th:

Cardiff City 3 Hereford United 2

April 30th:

Hereford United 4 Hartlepool 1

Goals from Steve White, Dean Smith (pen), Nicky Cross, and Gareth Stoker gave the Bulls their first win in three.
