March 1997

March 1st:

YOUNGSTER Roy Jordan made his debut for the Bulls this afternoon. He joined the club as an apprentice in 1995.

HEREFORD United 1 Exeter 2 (report from the People)

Exeter ended Hereford's seven-match unbeaten run with an impressive victory.

Hereford took the lead on 41 minutes when John Williams capitalised on good work by debutant Roy Jordan.

But the visitors were level five minutes into the second half when veteran Noel Blake forced home a Jason Rees corner.

The Grecians clinched victory 17 minutes from time when the influential Rees passed for Glen Crowe to score with an angled drive.

Hereford fought hard to save their unbeaten run with Jordan driving a shot against the angle of crossbar and post, but Exeter held on.

City now move above Hereford, who find themselves firmly back in the relegation dog-fight.

Hereford: Wood, Norton, Fishlock, Smith, Beeston, Matthewson, Jordan, Warner (Cook 80), L Foster, Williams, Downing (Pitman 80)

Attendance: 2735

ANOTHER report on the game - this from an Exeter Site:

Glen Crowe again, provided the winner with a 73rd minute strike, and gave Exeter the belief that they won't depart Division 3 into the uncharted seas of the GM Vauxhall Conference.

Crowe's clinical deciding goal - the teenager's second in two appearances since a loan switch from Wolves - completed a gritty transformation that destroyed Hereford's seven-match unbeaten boast.

Exeter had controlled the opening period but trailed at the break to John William's opportunist effort. And the signs weren't promising when leading marksman Darren Rowbotham wasted a close-range opportunity within five minutes of the restart. But immediately it was 1-1. The inspirational Jason Rees forced a 52nd minute corner and floated the flagkick to the far post. Bulls goalkeeper Trevor Wood fumbled and Noel Blake stabbed home - the match officials apparently the only occupants of Edgar Street who didn't believe the ball had crossed the goal-line before Lee Baddeley made certain.

Ashley Bayes immediately plunged to his right to keep out a thunderous 18-yarder from home debutant Roy Jordan. But City almost stole ahead through Baddeley's diving header when Wood dropped Jason Minett's 65th minute corner.

Crowe had twice gone close when Rees did the spadework in the opening 12 minutes, Minett had seen his 12-yarder blocked and Rowbotham was typically menacing.

Hereford's best attempts at a breakthrough saw Bayes smother Dean Smith's low drive and then exercise his reflexes to beat out Williams' venomous 29th minute shot. But they were gifted the initiative five minutes before the interval. Jordan's through pass was innocuous but Darren Hughes' backward header lacked sufficient power to reach Bayes and Williams gratefully seized and chance to lob the stranded glovesman.

Exeter's response was admirable. having clawed their way back on terms, Fox's outfit hunted a win with increasing ferocity. they assumed the driving seat in slick fashion. Rowbotham, substitute Tim Steele and Minett combined neatly, Rees smuggled the ball through a flat-footed Hereford defence and Crowe shrugged off the over-zealous challenge of Trevor Matthewson to net from eight yards.

March 8th:

HEREFORD 1 Northampton 2

Hereford, watched by their 1972 FA Cup team which beat Newcastle in a third round replay, lost the chance to get away from the danger zone.

The 1972 side were back for a 25th anniversary reunion only to see their old club reduced to 10 men with the sending off after an ugly brawl of John Williams in the six-yard box involving nearly a dozen players.

Northampton won the game with two early goals.

The first came from Parrish and soon after that the Hereford defence was caught napping after a partial clearance from a corner.

Full back Maddison swept the ball back into the box and an error by keeper Wood caught him off his line, giving Lee the simple task of hooking the ball into the net.

As Hereford tried desperately for a goal it was supplied in the last minute by Foster with a header from a Norton cross.

March 15:

CARLISLE 2 Hereford 3

Table-topping Carlisle United were brought down to earth as lowly Hereford inflicted the Cumbrians' first home league defeat since last November.

Struggling Hereford had another hero in keeper Trevor Wood who denied Carlisle with a string of excellent saves, leaving his best till last when he saved Own Archdeacon's 88th-minute penalty.

United romped into the lead after just three minutes when Rory Delap's long throw was flicked home by Paul Conway at the near post.

They went further ahead through on-loan signing from Middlesbrough Chris Freestone, who turned home a first-time volley from an Alan Smart cross.

But the visitors started their fight-back a minute later, pulling a goal back when Foster headed home from three yards, after Tony Caig could only block John Williams' eight yard shot.

The scores were level after 38 minutes when a goal -line clearance fell for John Brough who chipped the ball into the box for Foster to score with a header.

United could have retaken the lead minutes later but Alan Smart's goal was disallowed for offside.

Hereford clinched victory in the 51st minute exploiting a dreadful Dean Walling backpass that Foster ran onto before picking his spot.

HERE's another report on this game:

CARLISLE UNITED 2 - 3 HEREFORD UNITED

At Brunton Park, Saturday March 15th 1997

CARLISLE CRASHED to their first home league defeat for over four months as struggling Hereford stunned them at Brunton Park with an amazing fightback from two goals down. The hero for the Bulls was striker Adrian Foster who grabbed a dramatic hat-trick. For the first sixteen minutes, however, it seemed an away win was as likely as a Tory election victory. Paul Conway pounced on Rory Delap's long throw-in after four minutes to steer a shot inside the near post and put the Cumbrians one up. Twelve minutes later Allan Smart skipped away down the right wing to centre for on-loan striker Chris Freestone to slot home goal No.2 with ease. Perhaps United eased up, as within a minute the visitors got a goal back. It was a comedy of errors as Gary Cook mis-hit his shot straight to John Williams who forced Tony Caig into a good block but Foster was waiting to calmly head home from close range. In the 38th minute, the Bulls were celebrating the equaliser. Rob Warner's corner was flicked on by Rory Delap and Owen Archdeacon had to head off the line. John Brough sent in a dinky cross and Foster was goal-side of Dean Walling to flick home his header. Shortly after this, Mervyn Day was walking along the touch line to remonstrate with the linesman as an Allan Smart effort was chalked off for offside. It was a sign of the increasing tension on the bench and worse was soon to come.

Six minutes into the second half, Walling fluffed a simple back pass and Foster raced through to easily beat Caig and put the visitors in front. It was the signal for a United siege on Hereford's goal, with Stephane Pounewatchy unleashing a powerful 30-yard drive that keeper Trevor Wood could not hold at the first attempt. Steve Hayward was next to try his luck, but his 30-yard effort was well pushed away by Wood for a corner. Walling rose powerfully to get his head to the kick, but Wood was equal to it with a good save. With time running out, United appeared to have got the break they needed when Cook handled a Paul Conway shot inside the box. Archdeacon stepped up expecting to claim his 12th goal of the season but Wood was again the hero as he moved low to his right to save the kick.

March 26th:

GRAHAM Turner, striving to keep Hereford in the League, has signed his son Mark - who recently had trials with Leeds - on loan from Telford. Last week the transfer embargo placed on the Bulls was lifted.

24 year old Turner started as a Wolves trainee and went on to play for Northampton Town and Telford United.

March 27th:

TRANSFER deadline day
Brian McGorry: Wycombe to Hereford
Tony Agana: Notts County to Hereford

26 year old midfielder McGorry has joined Hereford from Wycombe Wanderers on transfer deadline day in an attempt to bring some stability to the midfield area which had looked so weak during the season. He started his career at Weymouth.

33 year old striker Agana started his career at Welling United and went on to play for Weymouth, Sheffield United, and Notts County for nearly six seasons before joining Hereford from Meadow Lane.

Released from Edgar Street, Neil Bartlett has joined Newport County.

March 29:

HEREFORD 0 Fulham 0 (report from various sources)

Third Division championship chasers Fulham found it hard going against struggling Hereford, who have not won a home game in five League matches.

But reinforced by four transfer-deadline signings, they fought determinedly in a scrappy game in which there were a few goalmouth incidents.

New signing Bradley Sandeman went closest to winning the game for Hereford a minute into injury time, but his 30-yard shot narrowly cleared the bar.

Goal chances were at a premium on a bumpy pitch with few clear-cut opportunities for either side.

Fulham had the better of the first half, with lively Darren Freeman missing two good chances, but Hereford, with four new faces in their side, also had chances with long-range efforts from Adrian Foster and Chris Hargreaves.

Although new signing Tony Agana showed good touches, Hereford were largely confined to shoot from distance in the second half.

Mark Turner, son of United boss Graham, had the fans leaping from their seats halfway through the second half, but his screaming 20-yard volley narrowly cleared the bar.

The visitors' attack was generally kept under control by Dean Smith and Trevor Matthewson, but substitute Mike Conroy should have grabbed all the points when he failed to connect with a Paul Brooker cross when clear in front of goal

Afterwards Graham Turner commented: "Fulham will be happier with a draw than we are.

"We're still in trouble, but go to Hull in good shape looking for three points."

Mar 31st:

HULL City 1 Hereford United 1

Hereford United gained a valuable point away at Hull to give supporters hope that their battle against relegation isn't lost. Hull took the lead on six minutes but Adrian Foster equalised just five minutes into the second half.
