November 1996

November 2nd:

HEREFORD United 1 Barnet 1 (report from the Sunday Mirror)

Hereford striker Adrian Foster snatched his eighth goal of the season to maintain the Bulls' unbeaten home record.

Hit-man Foster latched on to a looping overhead kick from Gareth Stoker before placing the ball wide of Barnet keeper Maik Taylor in the 56th minute to earn the Edgar Street men a point.

Foster's strike cancelled out a seventh minute goal from top Barnet marksman Sean Devine, who stunned the Hereford defence with a 20-yard sizzler.

However, Hereford would have won this match but for the brilliance of six super saves from Bees' keeper Taylor.

He twice denied Foster and Chris Hargreaves before fending off Stoker and John Brough.

Taylor scuppered Hereford as early as the first minute, diving to stop a close range header from Foster entering the net.

Taylor, in his second season with the Bees, then saved a point-blank shot from Hargreaves.

Hereford continued to call the tune, especially after the break, but it was that man Taylor who stopped the fine efforts of Stoker and Brough from giving Hereford victory

November 9th:

WIGAN 4 Hereford 1 (report from Sunday Mirror)

Hereford never recovered after sloppy defending gave Wigan a 2- 0 lead against the run of play.

United should have taken the lead when David Norton's cross was met by Adrian Foster, but his powerful header bounced off the bar.

Wigan, however, took the lead on 15 minutes when striker Graeme Jones' shot was blocked by keeper Andy Debont. The rebound was picked up by unmarked Spaniard Roberto Martinez, who side-footed in.

And just before the break, Debont miscued a goalkick, which went straight to striker Andy Saville. He set up Jones who side-footed home.

Colin Greenall grabbed Wigan's third with a bullet header from a corner.

Although Hereford sub Phil Preedy netted, Jones put Saville clear to score.

November 16th:

GILLINGHAM 1 Hereford United 0 - FA Cup 1st Round (report from Sunday Mirror)

Steve Butler's 25th-minute goal earned Gills a clash against Cardiff in the next round of the Cup - but it was hard-won.

They had plenty of chances to sink Hereford but, unfortunately, most fell to out-of-sorts striker Iffy Onuora.

He had four opportunities but found keeper Andy De Bont hard to beat.

De Bont even saved a Butler penalty - awarded after he floored Onuora in the second half.

That sparked the visitors into all-out attack, with keeper Jim Stannard saving twice before Chris Hargreaves hit the woodwork.

Then in a frantic finish Hereford had appeals for a penalty turned down, and the Gillingham defenders were forced to hack the ball off the line with virtually the last kick of the game.

''It's very disappointing to go out of the FA Cup at this stage,'' said United director of football Graham Turner.

''The lads are sure that Dean Smith's shot was over the line and also that we should have had a penalty. The team was lifted by Andy DeBont's penalty save and we could have got at least a replay.''

November 22nd:

GAVIN O'Toole (midfielder) Coventry to Hereford.

November 23rd

CARDIFF 2 Hereford 0

Hereford could have taken the lead inside two minutes as Smith headed Stoker's free-kick against the post.

Former Bull Steve White made them pay, first with a simple tap-in from close range after Dale played the ball across the face of the goal.

Then fellow-striker Dale collected a pass from Fowler before laying the ball perfectly for White to score with a fierce shot.

"We all know what Chalky's like and it was elementary defending following a corner," said Hereford manager Graham Turner.

"We should have enough know-how and experience at the back not to get caught like that."

Hereford: DeBont, Norton, Matthewson, Smith, Law, Forsyth, O'Toole, Stoker, Foster, Hargreaves, Brough (sub Preedy 77 mins). Subs not used: Cook, Warner.

November 30th:

HEREFORD 1 Chester 2

Chester ended five games without a League win, thanks to Flitcroft's late winner in a 2-1 success over Hereford. United started disastrously with Norton deflecting into his own net. But Smith equalised for Chester from the spot.

"We gave the points away," said Hereford manager Graham Turner.
